Workshop Participant Reviews & Comments
Mary Jo V., Bethesda, Maryland
“Thank you so much for a great learning experience! The workshop combination of ‘seeing as an artist’, field work, tech assistance and review are truly unique and just what I needed at this stage in my journey. I look forward to seeing you again.”
Sanford D., Pasadena, CA
“While I hadn't previously taken a workshop, I had read a number of books on landscape
photography and articles in OP and other magazines.
But in the workshop I learned a lot more about technique and composition that I don’t remember reading anything about anywhere else. In a word, I thought the workshop was EXCELLENT!
Garry W., Agoura Hills, CA
“I thoroughly enjoyed the Santa Monica Mountains “Masters Program” and “Digital Boot Camp”. Lessons learned during the 4 day workshop will follow me wherever I go. Tom and Van provided a ton of information and ideas in a very casual yet dynamic way. I highly recommend this workshop."
Steve F., Thousand Oaks, CA
“Tom and Van provided just the right mix of lecture and field practice. I am so happy that I attended. I always wondered why one image of mine was successful and another not so. I now know how to select, compose and capture a subject so I will be satisfied.
The instructors are both very capable photographers who openly share their knowledge while accommodating photographers with different skill levels. We learned much more than we could have from any book or video. Everyone in the workshop went home with a much larger toolbox of ideas and concepts that will help enhance their work. I certainly recommend their workshops to all who want to understand first - what constitutes a great photograph and secondly - how to create one."
Dr. Chuck K., Curator of Ecology, California Science Center, LA, CA
“I've taken four of your workshops and learned something new every time. You guys have made a real difference in my photography. And that is something that has been noticed and commented on by other people.
I greatly appreciate your reasoned and thoughtful approach … I highly recommend these workshops. You can't help but come away a better photographer who sees the world in a different way”
Dan H., San Diego, CA
"It was extremely educational, enjoyable and intense...which is just what I needed. I've been looking back at how I've been doing landscapes lately and where I need to improve, and you have beeninstrumental in sharing with me how I can do that -both in your lectures and your personal stories and examples. I want to express my extreme gratitude for this weekend. I've been going through a slump of being a little lazy and un-inspired with photography, and now I'm ready to go out and do it again!!"
Chuck G., Annapolis, MD
"The Death Valley National Park 'Wandering Around Outdoors' workshop far exceeded my expectations, which were high to begin with. Tom's and Van's passion for photography and love of the outdoors were evident and contagious. They did so much more than merely taking us to the overlooks. Starting by pre-workshop scouting of locations, they eliminated those that were sub-par due to the recent lack of rain. They worked hard to give us a unique perspective on a truly remarkable landscape, both in the field and in their teaching and review sessions.
Their teaching on design elements from the great masters of landscape painting gave me new perspectives on how to think about and simplify the scene before me. It's a long way to the west coast for me, but I will definitely be looking for an opportunity to return and take another … and again … thanks for a great weekend!"
Lillian D. H. - Hidden Hills, CA
"I wish I knew the words to express the wonderful, incredible, fantastic, amazing time I had. Getting to meet Tom and Van was an experience that will stay with me for a very long time. I have never been with such an amazing group, who are willing to share their photo knowledge”.
Joe F. - Agoura Hills, CA
"I got so much out of the first weekend, I had to come back. I have to say that I'm really starting to "get it. I am seeing much more than I ever imagined, and I'm shooting a wider variety of subjects with vastly improved results. Exactly what I was hoping for! It is evident that these guys really love to teach."
Susie M. – Lompoc, CA
“Everything is different for me now thanks to you guys. I now see it all the shapes, the lines, the angles of light, contrast and colors. I really want to thank you for a wonderful experience. I enjoyed your instruction and attentiveness and enthusiasm.. I know my camera so much better and I feel like I am really progressing in a hobby I have always loved. I look at art and real life with a much different eye. I look forward to comingback to more classes. Love You, Susie”
Ron W., Santa Barbara, CA
"Many thanks for your most inspiring and professional presentations last weekend. They were informative, inspirational, very well integrated, and complemented the field sessions. Your enthusiasm and dedication to the art of landscape photography was contagious. I highly recommend the workshop. The quality of the artistic and technical presentations was superb. And the entire experience was very inspiring. The workshop is also reasonably priced."
Terry A. - Santa Barbara, CA
“The ‘Masters Program’ workshop was really outstanding! In addition to its superb technical knowledge… the workshop did so much more for me. Not to get all Zen on you, but it's almost as if the workshop helped dissolve the separation between the photographer and the photograph, making it possible for me to see and capture images that allowed the viewer to then truly enter the space of the picture as well.”
Richard N., Pt. Richmond, CA
“ … our one-on-one workshop was an amazing experience – and not at all what I expected. I had taken photography classes before, where the emphasis was all about equipment & mechanics. But after our intensive & exhausting all day sessions, I felt like I had earned an advanced art degree.
Your emphasis on the ART of photography was exactly what I needed to take me from the snapshot level to framing my photos & hanging them on the wall. In short, you taught me how to see. This was money well spent, and I look forward to another session next fall."
Wendy H. - Irvine CA
“Your workshop was a renaissance experience! It challenged my understanding and beliefs and developed a new appreciation for photography as an art. I came to the workshop with no expectations other than to revisit the Eastern Sierra with a guide and a hope that I might take photos that I would want to look at a second time. I visited the same area last fall but returned home very disappointed to see my photos looking so flat. With your instruction and suggestions, I was able to see the same landscape but in different light and captured images that I will hang on my walls.
Grasping the 3D to 2D theory made me immediately aware of the art elements that provide depth and interest. Your friendly tutorial and pacing of information helped me to digest the basics. I was immediately able to apply these theories to my photography and saw a big improvement in my photos.
The experience I came away with was wonderful. I appreciated having enough space to wander about but also knowing that you were always available to give me suggestions and answer my questions. You two are ends of a spectrum that compliment each other. I enjoyed the “create insight” and “techy nerd” that each of you brought to the workshop. Thank you for the trip and I look forward to seeing you both again soon”.
Rob D. - Chicago, IL
“The materials and concepts presented at the workshop exceeded my expectation in every way. I was able to put the ideas presented to immediate use in the field, which is by far the best way to learn.”
